Face it people, crime isn't going away

I'm watching the Toronto mayoral campaigns, and well, people just don't understand exactly what it will take to rid themselves of crime. Crime isn't going to go away, and there are no tools to lessen it. More police isn't going to solve the problem, as it's impossible to have enough police to police the streets like people want. Even if there were enough police, unless they were given absolute authority to do what they need to do, they can't combat crime effectively.

This isn't to say that I think the problem lies with the law, it lies with the fact that we live in a semi-democratic state. The only possible way for there to be an effective manner of dealing with crime is for us to live in a totalitarian police state, and I don't imagine the 'anti-crime' vote would go for that.

What is SF?

Author Charlie Stross writes Let's put the future behind us, and ponders some interesting ideas. A quote:
"I believe the problem is not definitional (is Star Wars spin-offery SF, or not? Is SF literature, or pulp?) but semiotic. What does SF mean? And more importantly, what does it mean to the readers?"
I'm finding this to be pretty good reading, as at this moment, I'm mulling ideas for my own SF/horror flick that I hope to shoot in 2007.

A few things

1. Blogger fixed the problem with my template. Huzzah. (Update: Spoke too soon. It's been giving me grief while trying to post this.)

2. I'm getting a weird number of hits on the AP wire story about Parlophone going digital. I find it odd that people are coming here to find that story, of all places, and not actual news sites. I'm sort of dumbfounded, but still pleased. (And people are still coming to look at the Godzilla cloud.)

3. It seems like Ichi the Killer needed a second viewing in order for me to like the film, and I guess it helps that it was the uncut version this time around. The edited version actually leaves out scenes that are important to the story, and have no objectionable material I can see. Previously, I'd only seen the HK CatIII cut of the film, which chops 25 minutes from the film. I understand the gruesome stuff, but there's a 6-8 minute scene involving Kaneko and Ichi that was also cut for no apparent reason. I'm glad I had the urge to pick up the uncut version this week, or else I'd have missed out on actually enjoying this movie. (Which I don't randomly recommend for people. It's not for all tastes, and even less so than the previously reviewed Wild Zero.)

4. After watching some more of Doctor Who season two, I'm convinced that David Tennant is my favorite Doctor yet. Also, the episode "Love & Monsters" had me bawling. Damn you, Russell T. Davies.

Death of the demo tape

From Sympatico/MSN:
Major pop recording label asks aspiring stars to go online with demos

LONDON (AP) - A major pop recording label is opening an online portal for aspiring singers and groups, EMI announced Tuesday.

The group's Parlophone label, whose artists include Paul McCartney, Kylie Minogue, Radiohead and Norah Jones, is now accepting music files online, as well as in mailbags.

Since the rise of the Internet and the MP3 file, recording employees' e-mail inboxes have been clogged with website links and music attachments, in addition to demo tapes and CDs arriving vie regular mail, according EMI said.

New software designed by a former musician allows aspiring artists to upload their music files and publicity photos directly to Parlophone.

"One of our top priorities is to keep our talent spotting process as efficient and up to date as possible," Nigel Coxon, head of Parlophone's artist and repertoire team, said in a statement.

"This new system allows us to do just that, while at the same time helping us stay committed to giving anyone the opportunity to be heard."

Parlophone tested the new software over the summer, EMI spokesman Dylan Jones said. A few independent labels have previously adopted such a system.

The software tracks which recordings Parlophone workers have listened to, and allows them to rate tracks and artists. The system also alerts musicians when their tracks have been reviewed.

In the coming months, Parlophone hopes to phase all demo tapes to online submissions, Jones said.

EMI's other major labels include EMI Records and Virgin Records. No decisions have been made regarding switching any other labels to accept demo tapes online, Jones said.

Wow, that's great

I have no idea if my template is working or not. All my content is there, but no template. Ever since the Blogger outage, I haven't been able to get it working.

Joy.

Day of the Resident Evil

So, the trailer for the upcoming remake of George A. Romero's Day of the Dead has hit the web. The problem here? This movie looks like it has absolutely nothing to do with the original movie, at all, and looks more like a direct rip from Resident Evil. Here, see for yourself:

That said, it could very well be a decent movie. It's just not Day of the Dead.

For those about to ro... er, for those just joining us:

Welcome to my mind. It's a crowded place, with much traffic, and more than a little random. The links at the side are, for the most part, alphabetical under their less than alphabetical categories.

The blog itself has been under three iterations, but the second of which is off-line until I can find a host that doesn't have an esoteric list of rules that it implements but never posts for those to know what's going on. Supposedly, it's been shut down due to some sort of infraction which they won't share with me so that I may correct it. *shrug* Go figure.

Anywho, welcome aboard and mind your head.

Cheers...

One last thing to haunt your brain

The Pinker Tones "Karma Hunters"

It's insanely catchy. Like ebola, but less deadly.

Enlightenment

Heh, how about that. After years of head scratching, I finally get Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I'm now considering hunting down the first season.

Never saw that coming.

(And it's probably time for bed.)

This is just frickin' cool

Well, if you're into giant robots fighting each other during WW2, that is.

I so want to write and direct the movie around this.

Hard to Pegg

Well...

Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost are back with another comedy that looks even funnier than Shaun of the Dead. The movie's called Hot Fuzz, and it's a British take on American cop action movies. Here's a link to the two teaser trailers. Can't wait for this one.

You have got to be kidding me

So, on a whim, I decided to check out the state of Nintendo DS emulation. It seems that you need a 2.4 gHz P4 with 512mb of RAM to run a DS emulator. Yes, that's 2.4gHz with 512mb to emulate a system that runs a total of 100mHz (2 processors, a 67 and a 33) and 4mb of system memory.

Emulation is truly dead with results as pathetic as that.

Text from Coast to Coast Am, video from YouTube:
Nanjing UFO Video
This video, purportedly shot in Nanjing, China in August 2006, shows a disc-shaped UFO hovering above a building before abruptly vanishing in a flash of light.

Is it real?

Dunno. Pretty well done for a fake, though.

Some people just shouldn't be film critics

On a whim, I decided to see if there were any reviews for The Grudge 2 on Metacritic yet. There weren't but there was a link to some of Shimizu's other works, including one of my favorites, Marebito. Metacritic gave it a 50%, which I thought was peculiar seeing as how good the film was. It turns out that the people who gave the film poor reviews just didn't get the film, and in one case, seemed to have reviewed another movie altogether.

Now, I'm not saying this as some fanboy thinking that the film deserved better. I'm saying this as someone who has watched the film, and understood (for the most part) what I was saying. One reviewer goes off on a tangent about Japanese misogyny, another calls the film a gorefest, and another just writes it off as something that Americans just won't understand. The former comes off like the one newspaper round table discussion where people found Attack of the Clones racist by inserting their own presumptions after being told that the movie was considered racist, the second just sounds like somebody who watched the movie on fast-forward, and the third... I just dunno.

For the record, the Austin Chronicle review is probably the most reasonable of the negative reviews. The author actually sounds like they watched the movie with an open mind, and then decided that they didn't like the film. The other negative reviews? Unthinking tripe.

Ah, fanboys...

From Amazon.ca's entry for the Rebirth of Mothra DVD:
this dvd of godzilla may be thrilling in perhaps the appearance of the monsters or their destructive power.yet...i do not like mothra as it does not have many battle skills and looks feeble and weak....which is why many think that it is brave to stand against Godzilla. mothra makes the fighting scenes terrible..there is no melee combat taking place as it only flies around its opponents like trying to irritate them. in Godzilla vs Mothra, the ending is terrible as i do not believe that godzilla can be defeated by two mothra hatchlings just by being wrapped in a cocoon web. i feel that this rather underestimates the power and might of godzilla.it is also absurd that mothra can produce twins...one which resembles a bat.throwing godzilla into the sea at the end of The Rebirth of Mothra is also a weak ending. as all know, godzilla has the ability to live under water and as other weaker monsters don't die from falling from a height ( as demonstrated in godzilla vs gigan where ghidorah drops anguirus ), it is absurd that the show ends there. i would think that the ending is like this because the two mothra twins have no other way or power to defeat godzilla. on the overall i think that the rebirth of mothra merits only a rental...you probably won't be watching it again after the first...especially since there are better godzilla movies such as terror of mechagodzilla.
I should point out that this review isn't even about the right movie, when he gets into specifics, and even then he gets elements wrong from the movie he thinks this one is.

Hoo-boy!

As an aside, Media Blasters just announced the acquisition of the Toho flicks Frankenstein vs. Baragon and Latitude Zero, both will be released through their Tokyo Shock label.

Y'know...

Ever notice that every picture of Jessica Simpson, and I mean EVERY picture, looks like she's been the victim of recent head trauma? I mean, look at the eyes people, they aren't focused on anything. They're as vacant as a luxury condo in Antarctica.

It's really disturbing to look at, and I'm really tired of the media picking up on everything she does. I get enough disturbing imagery from the real news, and I don't need it from the fake news.

In case you're wondering

My lack of posting is due to the fact that my lungs don't seem like being a part of my body, and it's difficult enough trying to please them let alone run a blog. There'll be more content when this seemingly unending illness finally ends.
